Alex Losbäck Holstad of Decameron
Global Domination: We at Global Domination saw fit to add your release, “My shadow…”, to our esteemed Class 6(66) hall of fame. Do you feel this album is worthy of such an honor?
Alex Losbäck Holstad: Thanks for this honor. Well I definitely think this album is worthy. Back in ’95 when this album was recorded there where no other bands playing that complex music as we did. There where great songs and great musicians on this album. I’m really sorry that we split up.
GD: What was the ultimate goal for you while recording this album?
Our ultimate goal was to record a great album. And I think we did. Back in those days there where no computer editing or digital recording. What you hear is what we play. And we did it pretty damn good, haha.
GD: Name something of interest that you remember from the recording sessions.
I have many stories about this recording. We had our asses in the fax machine and faxed pictures of our asses to Swedish banks, Volvo and other big companies. Jonny (one of the guitarists) was drunk out of his mind the whole time. He had 10 liters of moonshine in his bag when he came to the studio. The result was that Johannes had to play all guitars on the album. And he did such an amazing job. The biggest problem was that me and Johannes are brothers. I was the producer of the record and I remember that we disagreed about the guitar sound, this resulted in that we didn’t speak to each other for 3 days…
GD: If you could change any one thing about this album, what would you change?
Well to be honest I would not change a thing. This was the best we could do at that time and I’m very fucking proud of it.
GD: Why do you think this album means so much to those who consider it a classic?
I think the fact that we were such great musicians and the honesty in our music is the reason. I can still listen to this album, 16 years after the recording, and find new things that impress me. The music is so complex, the arrangements are top notch, the vocal performance shows such a depth. “My shadow” got all the requirements that a classic album needs.
GD: Finally, as an artist and musician, what special place does this album hold in your heart?
“My shadow” is the opus of my life. Nothing can top this. This is the best music I have ever produced, it features my best vocal performance ever and I am very fortunate to have experienced this.
